It also seems to be producing some backpressure which appears to help reliability on short barreled guns (ARs) which tend to not cycle properly if the gas block is too close to the muzzle; I suspect it's one of the reasons behind their popularity.
Directing muzzle blast downrange (instead of the operator's face) would be the other. I doubt anyone is installing these with the intention of reducing felt recoil/making the gun more controllable on full auto, and anyone who did deserves a big FAIL. Get a DNTC comp if that's what you're after.

minimum engagement distance, the distance limit at which it becomes unsafe to shoot a person with airsoft.

I got a Mad Bull KX-3 this weekend from Airsoftparts.ca and installed it on my MP7, and I gotta say... I'm impressed by the sound increase! I like it.
Quote:
In theory, that's correct, as opening the holes would essentially create a baffle (like in your car's muffler), and thus, slowing down the sound waves as they are directed in and out of the holes and bouncing off walls. The sound would come out sounding a bit more muted but with more echo and in theory, with a bit more bass. (This is the same theory as stuffing sound filler in subwoofer boxes to slow down the sound waves to create deeper bass.) Having the holes closed up would focus all of the sound waves to be forced downrange and in line with axis of the barrel. To the shooter and operators to the side of the shooter, the sound may not sound much different, but target downrange would hear a much sharper and louder popping noise.

Illusion, thats great news! I was getting disappointed by all the negative reviews.
March, my AKSU had a type 0 cylinder in it and it also had a sharp smack sound to it. I'm not quiet sure if the cylinder type is the only reason why it would sound this way though, I think its a combination of things. |

hmm. Our experience has been different. I have the Hurricane full metal (read: 1lb) KFH with stainless liner and my teammate has the new Madbull. Both our guns are louder _without_ them. I'm using a systema M733, whos sound is made duller and ... rounder? by the Hurricane. Without it, its got more of a crack to the shot. With it, that crack is directional - forward only. This actually made sense to me and wasn't a bother as I never bought it with the intention of making the gun louder.
The KX3 by Madbull however obviously has claims to the effect of increased noise. My mate is using a 10.5" custom M4 (Marui based). His build makes quite the racket, rather like electrical snaps, so we were quite curious to hear it 'amplified'. Well, it sounds the same as my systema now. Quieter than it was no matter how the o-rings or cones are set and duller/rounder. I hesistate to use the word boomier as some have as that implies some sort of sonic impression of added power or something... there was no such impression gained in our experience. Just... rounder, less pop and directionally unsnappy. Bass +1 (?), Treble -3. I can't comment on how a typical model AEG will be amplified or made to sound as they are fairly quiet to begin with, but I can assure you that it isn't going to be made somehow more intimidating on the field by the sound of this thing added on. My recommendaton is to buy it for looks, which is a great thing and why we use'm anyways ![]()

Thats the only reason I bought mine was for the looks, and it's steel! It looks killer on my PTW CQBR,but that was just what I noticed with the sound that the M130 cyl. was louder than the M90? I'm not going to figure it out,I just like the look of it lol,Cheers!

I'm glad to hear that you had a positive experience Illusion, I thought that made sense that haveing the cones in "open position" would make it softer but I guess i misread the instructions. Thanks I will be sure to try it that way when i get home. (I'm on vacation right now)
