I cant be positive, but I've been told in the past that it's a weight affixed to the rear of the slide to allow the slide to properly work with the repeating action of sustained automatic fire.

Mechanically very interesting, but not the most stellar example of practicality. In some of those shots, it seemed like a simple double-tap would've put two rounds right in the center of mass in less time than having to burst, wing the target then compensate with a wild cloud of bystander-killing bullets. Americans and their fixation with firepower. :lol:
