For the uniform i think the best way and simple way to go is a OD BDU with a CF 82 webing.

Just a tip, whatever you end up doing, dont refer to it as a "Replica Firearm" as the CFC is rather twitchy about them because they are Prohibited Devices. Call it a "Non-firearm airgun" if you must call it anything. Hell, a deactivated firearm would be better as they cant take issue with it.

Actually from my experience with it, they don't care; movie/tv productions use replicas, including rubber guns, non firing replicas, model guns (including airsoft), squib guns and blank firing guns... squibs and blanks aside (blanks require an armorer on set, squibs require a licensed pyrotechnician at least), they're all considered "replica props" and aren't illegal per se (they're illegal to display in public without the proper permit).
Also the CFC isn't in the loop here. Actually I dont think the CFC is ever in the loop, they're non authoritive. Since its being shot in the city he needs municipal permits. The one for guns needs to go past law enforcement whom, as mentioned before, will most likely come around. Since its being shot downtown, its very likely they'd have to close off the sector to the public. Since you have a shoestring budget, things aren't looking too good for you. Sorry.

Nah the industrial sectors arent really "downtown" like that, going on the description he made in the first post... its surrounded by residential and touristy (old montreal, chinatown, bell center, etc) - but you do raise an interesting point; itd be a lot easier if they shot it someplace else than downtown (like in an industrial park in St-Laurent, hint hint)

As for our budget, we had planned expenses, but we're paying the film from our pocket money and my two chums got mugged. 800 bucks grew little wings.
 Goodbye film budget...As for shooting downtown, I'm used with the Bureau of cinema and their proceedings. We won't need any streets closed and we're not any close to some touristy place and we're not shooting long enough. I'm not even sure if we'll be using spots at all. It should be okay. Poncho : I don't mind mean realistic advice, I can be that sort of asshole sometimes myself  . As for volounteers, nobody's paid on our set and we're making it. We have 2 professionnal actors giving 40 to 50 hours free for the two main roles. Films are fun man! You should try it sometime!Polo: Thanks for volounteering! I'll PM you to check it all out! Airsoft is quite an uneconomical way of shooting a short film. There are more easier ways of getting the required props that you need. I too am currently working on a film project involving the use of prop fire arms. Recently we have found that it is easier to rent from an actual prop company which solves your issue of legalities. Of course you will still need a filming permit. This is also a cheaper alterative than buying airsoft guns for props. The only requirements is that you have someone on scene with the prop firearms, who has his PAL and is fully aware of saftery proceedures.

You need a registered Firearms officer or armorer with a minimum ten year in the industry. It doesn't matter if it is a real weapon firing blanks or a plastic gun firing water. A prop house will have one available, but not for $200.
Don't ask me how you get ten years experience if your not able to work without ten year experience. It is Canada. Good luck staying within the law on this one. |
