this is going to be a dumb question but whast the difference between the $350 ones and the $1500 ones. are they really that much better to be priced that high?

VERY big difference You pay for what you get, just like in cars.

Let me put it this way:

$500 M4 = Civic
$1500 PTW M4 = Ferrari

Opinion only, a 500$ M4 can be a really dam good gun for year. If you have a car only to go to A point to B point, you'll find a Ferrari useless (and to much pricy).

But you have some guy who always want more than other and will buy the 1500$ gun instead.
