Well i guess you could fire them with nothing in the pop bottle but the round would probably just tumble through the air as it wouldn't be balanced. I've never been hit with an airsoft bb so I don't know what the pain factor would be being hit with a bb. But with anything you use whether it be bb's, rubber grenades, etc there is the chance you will get hit and a chance of being injured you just have to decide if you want to take the chance.

anything that takes black powder charges and such are not allowed on our field. Too many chances for something to go wrong....

The big problem with mortars is not the design, but the way they are fired.
It's hell to find a mortar that is 100% safe to use for people and the environment. Anything with a heat source as an igniter, blackpowder, other explosives tends to go against a whole truckload of laws. The only safe mortar system I have seen uses a compressed spring to send the contents of a film canister up and over maybe 30-50 feet at the most. There are many threads about mortars (and designs) you can read here to find more info. |

catapult type design? wouldn't be a mortar anymore, but it should accomplish basically the same thing.

wouldn't it be possible to use CO2 and water to launch the projectile a sufficient distance?

It is such a shame that we are stuck with Piat-based mortar technology.
I would like to see a video as well. |

I'm sure if you get a strong enough spring or springs you can make somthing quite useable. Just a matter of figuring out a way to compress them that does not involve steroids.

JSOC has tried tested and proven mortars, fires super simple, easily built, VERY low cost disposable rounds. Has a range of 600+ feet, light enough to throw over your shoulder and bugger off, and it runs off either 2 bike pumps (two for speed) or an air compressor. Even with one bike pump it doesnt take long to charge. They're extremely durable and waterproof, and pretty accurate for what it does. Not to mention sounds awesome from the recieving end.
We've also make short rocket launchers based on the same design, fires either 2" nerf rockets or the same rounds our mortar uses. |

When I was kid they used to sell racecars that you inserted a co2 cylander in the back end of it and you had this spring loaded plunger thing you pulled back on and let go it pierced the end of the co2 cylander and the model racecar shot off. They were guided by a long string that was anchored to the ground by long nails to keep them going strait. Might be possible to make some foam rounds that you could put a co2 cylander in the bottom end and rig up a pierceing device.

So you're saying that what goes up is guaranteed not to hit me?
