Hmm, I did'nt actually catch any deaper sound. the camera man also moved closer to the muzzle when he added the KX3, which may have had some effect to the sound recording.
I would imagine the cones withing the Kx3 act as some sort of "megaphone" but what I'm not sure of is why haveing the holes within line up would make it loader than if it was in the closed position where there would be no sound escapeing? I don't know. I'd be interesting to hear what someone who has had some first hand experience with this has to say.
