Yes, the supports are needed unless you have a one-piece outer barrel, otherwise you really need those supports as the barrel wobble is obvious at first and will only get worse. A one-piece outer barrel is the quick and easy solution. However, depending on the outer barrel, you may lose the ability to fit a small battery in the RIS, and may have to go with a Crane stock, AN-PEQ, or RediMag to house the battery.
