I'm staying away from the new LiPo manufacturers until they have some better known history for a few years. So far I'll trust Kokam cells as they've been in the r/c game for a few years now and I've intentionally abused them to try to assess how they fail.

Clean manufacturing techniques are very important in Lion batteries. All it takes is contamination from a metal burr or a faulty self protection circuit to cause a bad failure. I'd put more faith in an older battery design from an established manufacturer than anything cutting edge from a new manufacturer.

On a more specific note, I'm not too happy how they skipped over any circuit protection features. LiPo batteries require built in protection to interrupt current flow in case of: overdischarge (run it down too far), overheating, excessive current draw, overcharge.

Some system designers put the protection ccts in the pack, sometimes they're put somewhere external to the battery. In any case they're necessary so they're issues to be addressed.

The separated cell setup is a nice way to distribute the thin individual cells in available space. However, I wonder if they're more prone to damage because they're individually more prone to bending.
