For backpacking, MSR stoves are phenomenal, the Whisperlite Universal (which I have) is nice as it takes just about any fuel source you throw at it while being light, compact, and able to utilise a variety of cookware options. However, if you're staying within spitting distance of your car, I'd lean towards going with something that offers a bit more temperature control to allow frying and simmering that tactical bacon. Jetboils are awesome too, but even more limited in what you can prepare with them as they really only run with the Jetboil pot on top (similar to the MSR Reactor).
As far as e-tools go, useful if you have to dig your own latrine, or a shallow grave for some hapless camper who stole your campsite, but not needed for most camping in this part of the world, at least in my experience.
+1 to Mountain House meals as well, I'm particularly partial to the beef stroganoff.
