Compare the total lengths of the old piston+piston head and the new piston + head. You're new setup is probably too short (thus setting the first tooth too far forward to be engaged properly by the sector gear). Are you mixing brands of parts for the piston body and piston head?

You could try a different piston body/head combo or put in a spacer/washer to increase the length accordingly.

Also...it's a common thing to shave the 2nd tooth of the piston so that the sector gear clears it for sure. If it tags it when cycling it messes up the teeth.

Note:
By first tooth of the piston I am referring to the big tooth right at the rear of the piston, it is the first tooth to engage with the sector gear...the 2nd tooth is 2nd from the rear, etc....
