Whenever I try to take pictures, they always turn out terrible. Whats involved in taking good shots like these? (please forgive the highly loaded question)

Maybe a tripod if your hand isn't steady
and you gun has to look good obviously

These were actually very simple. I got up early in the moring to capture the morning light. No flash. The rest is just placement. Just make sure your shutter speed is at least 1/60 sec to prevent blurr. Use a tripod if you have one if the light is not sufficient for 1/60 sec. Or, if your camera has image stabilization, the helps a lot, too. Use a low ISO and a large aperture (small number) to help in image quality. The large aperture will enable a faster shutter speed and the low ISO will give you good image quality from a small digicam. If you have a DSLR, high ISO's are fine.

That is the official name of the real steal version. Not TM G36C. LOL
