How does the hop up system work?

just wondering how the hop up system works :)

hopup works by putting a backspin on the bb as it flys though the air. A backspin makes it go farther before dropping in the vertical direction.
It emparts this backspin by the hopup rubber, located in the reciever, as the bb moves, the top grazes the rubber, causing the bb to spin.

dunno if i can get more simple than that.

i knew about the whole back spin thing :D just wanted to know how the backspin was created, thank you

An adjustable wheel moves a bump up or down that protrudes in to the top of the barrel.

As the BB passes by, that bump grips the top of the BB and causes it to spin backwards. The higher up the hop up, the more it pushes down on the BB. The more it pushes down, the greater the backspin. The greater the backspin, the greater the Magnus effect.

Also see, Bernoulli's principle.

different rubbers create different grips, with more and less consistency, if you lube the rubber (or water gets in) the rubber no longer grips and your hopup becomes pretty well ineffective.

just wondering how do you adjust the hopup then? why doesnt everyone just set the hopup to max so it flies really far?

too much hop up and bb wont fly level, also you will have mega bbs jams with max hop up.

max you hop up and turn your gun side ways when you shoot. Then you can hit Jerry hiding behind the tree.:)

Too much hop up will send your BB skywards. Not enough and it will plummet to the earth far before it's time. Get it just right.

im guessing hopup differs from bb weights :P

yep
