Mech Box, which is easiest to work with!?
 

I upgrade and take a part my G&G ver 2 mech box every other week just to clean and lube it up. I am tired of playing around with the mechbox trying to put the 2 pieces together. Its such a pain in the ass when it doesnt always fit smoothly and the spring shoots out with my spring guide.

Its happened to me on the field and took hours to find the spring guide.:hammer:

Which Version 2 mechbox is easiet to work with?

Well, I guess the version 7 is what you're looking for. All the trigger bits are on the outside of the box instead of the inside, making it a lot easier to close the box. Downsides are there are a lot of trigger bits decorating the outside of the v7 and that you'd have to buy a M14. Well, buying a M14 might not be a downside. ;)

If it comes to regular maintenance, one of the easiest ones I've had a chance to work with is the Pro-Win gearboxes...

They cost a pretty penny and require modifications to your receiver, but once installed, are a dream to work with. Super fast spring changes, zero preload on the lower half of the gearbox for easy opening/closing, spring decocking features, integrated hop up chambers for maximum air seal... all those features make the extra effort and money worthwhile.

PS - you *SHOULDN'T* have to open and close your gearbox weekly for cleaning and lubing... if it requires it, then there's something seriously wrong with your setup and/or the lube you're using. It would be akin to bringing your car in for an oil change on a daily basis.
Besides being unnecessary, you cause excessive wear to all your screw holes - your threads WILL strip very soon if you keep up your current maintenance schedule.

i've been doing upgrades every now and then, bit by bit to my gear box. and also trial and error.

This week end i was at muskoka and my Sector gear's teeth stripped. LOL it was almost game time and i was panicing to get it together. i was like F* piece of shit, go together damnit. lol. and finaly after a bit i got it together.

Threads on screws dont wear off unless you cross thread them.

they discontinued the pro win, any other suggestions? how about ICS's gear boxes. Can i use ICS's dual gear box with G&G?

It doesn't mean you can't get the Pro-Win... I'll have one for sale soon. hehehe.

As for the ICS boxes... I have no idea if they'll fit a G&G.

And yes, you can strip threads without cross-threading. Diecast cinc-aluminum isn't exactly the hardest material around - given enough hard tightenings, a steel screw can and will eventually rip through the threads.

Haven't thought of the price yet, but I'll let you know. We can continue this via PM if you're interested, but for sure I'll have a 7mm box going up for sale, already assembled and installed once in one of my guns. Used briefly for one short game. Already has parts installed in it, but is completely customizable and configurable as you require. Also has a custom modified Prometheus HARD piston installed as well. (The stock Pro-Win piston eats donkey balls.)

I *may* also put up an 8mm gearbox as well... but that's undetermined as of yet. Depends on what I figure out what to do with my counter-sniper setup...

Both of them are limited edition... once the black ones get sold out, they're gone as well.

Not really... they're all going to be pretty much the same thing, besides the ICS design - although I've heard of some alignment issues with those. There are some issues of backlash with them.

Going with a standard v2 gearbox, you can't go wrong with a G&P, Hurricane, Progear, etc etc type setup. I don't really recommend the Guarder ones, since they need some work to get stuff to fit/work right from the get-go. Even Marui gearboxes are fine (if you can find them), assuming you're not using a high powered spring, rigid piston head and/or in the winter.

One thing to remember Illusion is that G&G mechboxes have the screws on the opposite side to a Marui and every other manufacturer. When you open up a Marui box, the screws are on top when the nozzle faces you right hand and the motor pinion entry is facing your body. G&G screws are on the other side.

Now imagine trying to assemble them with the arrangement this way. You have to assemble the halves then flip the mechbox over to put the screws in it. Very old G&G may not be this way, but all the post-2005 I've opened have been this way.

And the post-2005 G&G replacement mechboxes don't fit in pre-2005 guns. The selectors don't line up and you have a bitch of a time squeezing it in there.

I don't miss working on G&G guns at all.

I doubt ICS will work in there as G&G bodies don't use ICS AR release, the selectors are different profiles, the ICS upper can't have a stock screw run through the spring guide and likely many more issues that don't make the idea worthwhile.

I also tried a Systema M120 complete mechbox in a pre-2005 G&G gun and it wouldn't fit without some Dremel work, and I wasn't in the mood for that crap, but it fit an old CA metal body no problem.

Hmm... interesting. I haven't worked on ANY of the newer G&G guns, so I wasn't even aware of these issues.

ICS Ver.2 gearbox is a "bit" longer than regular Ver.2 boxes. I have read this discussion about it on FAS. To fit a ICS Ver.2 Gbox on other brand(G&P, G&G, Guarder, etc) requires a lot of modification on the upper reciever. In other words its not worth it. Get a different brand G&P, Hurricane, Pro-gear etc. Cheers!
