Building an M4 from scratch
I am interested in building an M4 from scratch by buying all the parts separately and putting them together.
I was just wondering if anyone could post a list of parts I would need to buy if I wanted to fit a Gearbox like a systema M120 into a Hurricane Metal Body if I don't have a Tokyo Marui M4 to work off of as a base. http://www.wgcshop.com/pcart/shopper...B-HK_cat_Metal Bodies This link shows a pic of what's included with a Hurricane H&K 416 body. HURRICANE Metal Body
Hurricane Steel Accessories set Systema M120 Gearbox for M16A2/SR-16 (rear wired) and.... Some sort of battery stock (and the battery for it) - get one that comes with all the hardware needed like wiring, spacer, bolt, and washer. Some sort of Front end - again get one that is complete with outer barrel, delta ring, etc. Flash hider would be a bonus. KA and G&P RAS kits are nice. You'll also need an appropriate length inner barrel and some hop-up rubbers. And a grip and motor. Oh and some mags if you plan on shooting it. :D |
You may want to check already built guns by ICS and CA. That will probably be FAR cheaper than building it from scratch.

Check out my M16 series on the For Sale section on the boards. Its true building a Aeg from scratch is way expensive than getting a fully assembled Aeg. Out of 5 M4 Aeg's I had only one that is full and it was my first Aeg. A TM SR16. The rest, costume build metal M4's and I still have them except for the TM SR16.

I scratch built this one from parts from 6 different manufacturers. Came together like lego.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...y/Img_1972.jpg A quality metal body like Hurricane or G&P will minimize your problems. Everything attaches to the body, so that's where most of the fitment problems start. Yeah it's expensive... but that gun isn't made by anyone. |

I didn't think it was uncommon for people to put M4s together on their own, because you see one every now and then out at the fields and they're really cool. |
i did a C8 this year, and I can tell you that it is prohibitively expensive to do. I used assorted body pieces from an SRC, metal reciever from Guarder, systema mechbox. After fitting everything together nicely, I still had to dremmel out certain areas of the metal reciever for wiring and such. By the time all was said and done, I wished I would have just bought a systema PTW, it would have been a couple hundred dollars more expensive, but also acts, looks, and feels like the real thing.

4 of the 5 Armalites I've ever owned were scratch-built. It's easy with that platform since Armalite aftermarket and oem parts are plentiful and easy to find.

So what companies do you recommend for metal bodies/front ends/stocks? I haven't built an M4 from scratch before, so I wanna know which parts will give me the most hassle and which ones the least. I really appreciate everyone's help. And that magpul carbine stock copy from G&P looks badass. |
Newer version Guarder New Generation or G&P Metal body.

Another avenue you may want to look down would be getting a cheap doner AEG from the for sale boards. Often you can find damaged or 'high milage' AEG's for cheap and it ensures that you dont miss out on any small parts if its your first build. Another plus is you can buy your parts over time and still have a usable gun. By the end you should be able to put all the old pieces back together and have two complete guns out of it. Selling the doner also gives you a nice cash boost at the end of the build. Just some food for thought.
As for metal bodies, HurricanE have been the best from my expirence as I've had issues with G&P bodies, specifically around the selector. |
