I have a waterproof bushnell nv monocular that I use and works great.Works without batteries when the stars are out and has ir when you are inside.Cost-$200 at eftson science.

royal marine June 16th, 2005 17:26

yeah i was looking at monoculars like gen 1 etc & wondered how they perform.

FOX_111 June 16th, 2005 17:30

I also have a monocular. It's Gen1 and it's basically not suitable for other thing than perimeter surveillance.

The FOV is not whide anough to use it to walk and the resulition is not very good.

But if you are watching a base or survailling a trail with a minomum of starlight or better, a moon, you will see everything. The built in IR illumination work only for close range and I would not use it because at a certain angle, you ca see a little red light.

One day, I will invest in one of those bigass NVG that cost 3000-4000$+

royal marine June 16th, 2005 17:37

yeah i just thought that you guys might just use them to spot someone & know where they were. yes anything like gen 2 & 3 are $$ !!

Gryphon June 16th, 2005 17:57

Like I said on another forum, if it's the difference between seeing fuzzily in the dark with a narrow field of view, versus not seeing at all, the choice is obvious. Gen1 really isn't that horrible. Certainly if you can buy a Gen2 then go for it, but if you're budget-oriented or don't plan on using it much, Gen1 works just fine.

D_oo_S June 16th, 2005 18:09

I had two pairs of nightvision... Then sold them because Gen+1 licks the big one.

Thats what I have... its not half bad...

royal marine June 16th, 2005 21:56

yeah ive seen that mate, nice but outa my range at the mo. i just wanted to see if alot of you guys used some sort. hey i was on the wolfpack site earlier watching the vids. loved the broken leg 2. but i cant see the gallery

Sgt_Lynch June 16th, 2005 23:24

Got a Gen1 scope. Good enough to shoot with.

ert June 16th, 2005 23:46

IMHO gen1 isn't worth the money. It just turns the darkness into fuzzy greeness... unless IR illumination is on, in which case you might as well put an IR stobe light on your head and mark yourself as a target for enemies who have NVG.

Kutter June 16th, 2005 23:46

I use to have something like this:
http://www.atncorp.com/NightVision/N...lars/NightStar
I have to admit it was fun but I found that you had to use the IR illuminator to get a clear image, which isn't that great since anybody else with an NV system could see the beam and pinpoint you.

disndat June 17th, 2005 01:02

I agree with Fox,you have to realize its limitations(like fuzziness)but its great for finding people in the shadows that otherwise you would not see without it.It CANNOT compare with gen 2 and higher but you get what you pay for.

Affliction June 29th, 2005 20:22

Why use something so expensive? What if you somebody accidentally fires at you (as it is dark) and shatters your NVG lense and messes up the internals?

randas June 29th, 2005 20:52

You get/make one of those lense protectors that people put on other expensive optics... Basically just attach a piece of plexi over the lense
