Local kid brings bad attention to airsoft

Boy arrested for shooting pellet gun
by Castanet Staff - Story: 42344
Oct 8, 2008 / 4:27 pm

It was a painful wakeup call for a young Westside boy.

A 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg with an ‘airsoft’ gun Wednesday. The shooter was a 13-year-old boy who was playing with the gun while they were waiting at a school bus stop.

Constable Steve Holmes says the 12-year-old was struck with a plastic pellet.

“It did not penetrate the boy’s clothing, but did cause minor swelling. The airsoft gun was brought to school where it was eventually confiscated by school staff. Police were called and seized the airsoft gun,” says Holmes.

He says the 13-year-old was initially arrested for assault with a weapon.

“When he was interviewed by police, it was clear that the young man was remorseful for his actions. As he has no history of being in trouble, police are looking at pursuing the matter through restorative justice.”

Holmes says this is not the first time an airsoft gun was taken to a school and a student injured.

“Police are reminding students not to bring these kinds of things to school as the temptation to show it to others is too great and, as in this incident, trouble can result. Police are also asking parents to be cognizant of their children’s use of these guns and to be in control of where they are kept.”

He says airsoft guns are made mainly of plastic with some metal parts, and some look like real firearms.

“Though most airsoft guns in Canada are made from clear plastic with bright orange muzzles to differentiate them from real ones, they are not toys and can still be dangerous if not handled properly. Most airsoft guns employ a spring loaded pump system that can propel a .12 gram plastic pellet to a velocity in excess of 300 feet per second. This can easily cause minor injuries or possibly more serious permanent ones such as the loss of an eye.”

No, this just can't be....if they can cause the loss of an eye...that is causing bodily harm and that would make them NOT replicas.......it just CAN'T be true......

Rukus October 8th, 2008 20:11

I wonder if it was clearsoft or actual airsoft that was the cause of the shooting.

panda86 October 8th, 2008 20:18

I've never looked at Canadian Tire or Walmart, but are there age warnings with Clearsoft on the packaging? How did a 13 year old buy one? (unless it was bought for him / given to him).

More reason why the age limit restrictions are a good idea.

HeadlessChicken October 8th, 2008 20:21

Heres another incident in Oshawa.

There are age restrictions of clearsoft, as well as bb guns and pellet guns...some say for Ages 10 & up, others say 12&up...most I've seen is 16&up...and that was for a 495fps break barrel pellet gun. They don't check for ID.

pusangani October 8th, 2008 20:33

at walmart, they get an alert that beeps if you buy anything paintball or airsoft related, it prompts the cashier to ask for id, of course mommy and daddy will be there to purchase it for them tho

I'd assume that it's probably clearsoft, considering the weight of the BB is measured in .12 grams.

Reaper99 October 9th, 2008 14:33

The RCMP is just blowing this out of preporsion as always.

trufret October 9th, 2008 15:03

Why is it that when these stories come up a few times every year in most cases these kids never get charged with anything? It just reinforces the entitlement attitude these little brats have had instilled in them from birth. If they can't get him on a real weapons charge because it's clear (not sure now the courts look at that) at the very least being shot without permission constitutes battery. They aren't gonna charge him with the full assault with a weapon and he'll end up getting a few hours of Community service at most. The worst part is other kids see this and think they can carry airsoft guns around in public and shoot radon people with them and the worst that's going to happen is they get their toy taken away.

Cheeseduck October 9th, 2008 15:15

of course they are...what else is new. it's the RCMP in case you haven't noticed, they ALWAYS blow stuff out of proportion. they never intervene unless it's to give some kid shit or else some1 gets killed. in case you haven't noticed, lately the RCMP and local law enforcement all over canada has been having a bad reputation lately for police brutality or "accidental" DWIC's(death while in custody). law enforcement in canada AND usa is a joke now-a-days. they don't do their job worth a shit in my opinion. at least wen these kids are firing these airsoft weapons it's a little red mark and an ouchie then an i'm sorry lets have pizza. christ, wen the cops here use their weapons they are killing people almost with almost every shot cause they are trigger happy people. and then wat...a little slap on the wrist from the governement saying "don't do that..." wtf is that!!! although i wasn't around back then, i wish we had law enforcement from like 30 years ago. christ, u shoot some1 with an airsoft gun those cops would take and shoot u with it!! anyways, my point here is that OUR cops are not very good at their job and ALWAYS blow stuff out of proportion..i personally feel that until they can strighten out their own accords, they shouldn't b allowed to make a bad name for a whole sport because a couple kids are always dickin around, and then they have the brass to make the situation sound worse than it really is by giving details that aren't really needed that makes the guns sound more dangerous than they really are. i apologize if this post seems forward, offensive, bias, directed, or completely out of line but this is my way of venting about such a stupid situation. and if there are any cops on here or RCMP i apologize for this post but being on here u must then be an airsofter and b able to see the frustration from our point of view...even more so since we are not RCMP or cops.

srry again if this seems irrational.

hot_shot under fire October 9th, 2008 15:39

I know im only 14, but i've never owned an airsoft gun. I use my dads for target shooting in a secure environment with no other houses or buildings for 2 KM. I dont shoot my friends or anything, and im VERY carfull when it somes to firearms.

What I cant belive is that some kids I know have there hunting licences, and can "properly" use firearms. One kid at my school who has his licence is reclace with a firarm. He pointed a loaded .308 at me once and said he was going to shoot. That was'nt fun. The same kid shot me point blank with a 495 FPS pellet gun in the ass. It went in and I was in the emergancy room for 4 hours standing there! I didn't even get a sorry! Some kids these days are brutal!

L473ncy October 9th, 2008 16:30

^^^

A talk with the local CFO might make it so he never gets a licence renewed or get it revoked ever again.

Also pointing a loaded .308, even a loaded .177 or .22 at something you don't want to shoot is still a no-no in any book.

I completely agree. Take that to the authorities and screw this kid over, he does not deserve to handle RS firearms, or even airsoft if hes pulling that shit.

Yes, I did report him when it happened when I was 13 and he got in so much shit that he went to court. He was charged with careless use of a firearm and they slaped a nice big fine on him. He is unabled to hold a firearm ever again, and his dad is'nt even aloud to use a firearm again!

I dunno, sometimes you have to wonder whats going through some of these peoples minds.

I remember a long while back when I was still in gradeschool, Some kid braught one of those green clear stripcap guns and decided to scare kids on the playground with it. This was before clearsoft was common.

BTW if he was there and didn't even say sorry then you shouldn't even kick him in the face.

Shirley October 9th, 2008 21:34

What a douche.
When I was in elementary school, we weren't allowed to bring any type of guns period. Not even a neon orange coloured water gun.

But hey, I'm sure when we get something new, we all want to show it off.
There's always a time for anything, but the kid learns the lesson the hard way.

Sergeantmajor October 9th, 2008 22:42

If the kid that got shot was anything of a future man he'd whooped the other kids ass. broke that gun on his nose. thats what. Why are becoming a "wrap in bubble wrap and hide in the closet" society?

Wow... way to encourage kids to over-react to a minor incident with violence. He sure would have proved his "manliness" had he done that. Nothing like an assault charge, and probably suspension from school to prove you're a "man".

Hell for all we know these kids were friends, and somebody's mother or a teacher over-reacted and called in the cops.

EDIT: I just realized you're 16. Wow... never mind. You dont know how to be a man yet anyway.

...

I love this community.

I've seen kinds bring real Airsoft guns to my old High School before, I have no idea how they got them but I've seen Silver Desert Eagles, Beretta's, and 1911's with metal bodies at my school before. They were definitely Airsoft guns and not real guns, because I'm pretty sure I'd hear the real ones going off in the ally's and such when they're "plinking" at lunch time. At least no one was stupid enough to pull one on someone else or shoot someone else with malicious intent at that school. They were at least smart enough to not wave them around either, and I only ever saw them "plinking" in ally ways and such at lunch break usually.

Either way, it's still bad, and I would have reported them if I knew it was actually going to do any good. Really though, if someone's going to bring an Airsoft gun to school to impress his friends, he's not going to learn by getting a smack on the wrist from the cops and school administration.

Airsoft shooting isolated event
by Wayne Moore - Story: 42358
Oct 10, 2008 / 5:00 am

The shooting of a 12-year-old boy with an airsoft pellet gun, while waiting for a school bus in the District of Westside Wednesday, was an isolated incident.

That is the opinion of both the RCMP and School District 23 officials.

The boy was shot in the leg by another 13-year-old boy. Both are students at Constable Neil Bruce Middle School.

The victim was not seriously hurt, although the incident did cause his leg to swell.

SD23 Superintendent, Mike Roberts, would not divulge the discipline handed out in this instance.

Roberts says he is not hearing of an increase in weapons in district schools, specifically the increasingly popular airsoft guns.

"There are very few instances of students bringing replica guns to school. I think part of that is schools tend to be a controlled environment in that there are strict rules in place," says Roberts.

"Students pretty much know that they are not welcome. The student in this case broke the rules and will suffer the consequences of that, but incidents of that are very rare."

Roberts says there are far more reports of students with these types of guns out on a Friday night or on a weekend, and that he says, is where the concern lies.

RCMP Constable, Steve Holmes, who has spent time as a school liaison officer, echoed many of those same sentiments.

"Is it a cause for great concern? I would say not, but the fact that even on the rare instance it does show up, it indicates kids and parents do always need to be aware," says Holmes.

"Parents have to sort of be in control of this because if you look at any other toy that you consider a toy, it doesn't compare to this kind of thing."

Holmes says there was an incident at Kelowna Senior Secondary last year where a student was shot with one of these guns. He says criminal charges were laid in that instance.

He says other weapons, such as knives and clubs are also confiscated from time to time, but again, says these are not the norm.
Well that seems like a particularly well-reasoned response actually. No condemnation of the items or the sport. They even do the "other dangerous items" comparison.

Wilson October 10th, 2008 14:52

Relax. Real weapons will be banned outright long before airsoft is banned. If any action is going to be taken it is going to be something to do with controlling access to these clearsoft toys and possibly educating children and parents on the dangers of their use.

Well, that would make sense anyway.

Ok, just to clear up some stuff. Me and M700 talked it over(or should I say fought...) and he did his usual thing, ran at me, lightly punched, and ran away again. Second time around, I punched him in the mouth, said shut up on ASC, no one likes you, and thats the end of that.

No one is interested in your bashful slapfights. Just stop talking to him and stop telling us about him. We know he's a retard and you're only serving to further associate yourself with him.

If you think you're being the grand champion of ASC your really not. Your just making ASC associated with your fight thus bringing on a bad image.

Yes, I know that, and I don't think I am the grand champion of ASC. The 5 second scrap was onle 40% about ASC, the other 60% was about us not getting along, and him bugging me with endless PM's. I'm just saying, he isn't going to be on here again, and that is the end of it.

And we should care about your personal feud why? I don't think many of us cared about him being on here because he was a twat plain and simple. Leave your personal feuds that we don't care about to yourself.
