Open bolt Vs Closed bolt

What is the difference? Is one better than the other? Because im looking for a barrel for my We Scar Gas blow back and all I can find it Open bolt barrels.
Is it open or closed bolt?

Thanks

HKGhost December 7th, 2010 17:00

currently the only open bolt rifle from WE is the PDW and G39. all the other rifles are closed bolt. Open bolt looks more realistic and the closed bolt has the brass tube that some people think it looks like a bullet.

Inner Barrel? The M4 inner barrels should work fine.

joey1107 December 7th, 2010 17:29

Yeah inner barrel. Ive heard people having some problems with the m4 barrels in the scar

IRONSIGHT December 7th, 2010 17:42

A barrel designed for the M4 only will not fit unless you modify it. The pin that holds it in the brass chamber is in a different location so you will need to cut another groove it the barrel in the right spot. Airsoft global has barrel with both slots in them.

RA-Tech sells precision inner barrels that specifically are designed for the we scar. But when I bought one, it did not work. Don't know why.

Zaphod December 8th, 2010 14:41

ive put WE M4 barrels into SCAR's. They were the RA-Tech ones and they have two notches so it will fit both.

Im not sure what version they were but they worked fine

is there any difference in the performance or durability between closed and open bolt ???
I've heard that we scar is shit cause is ver. 1 and pdw is that what i need...

ThunderCactus January 23rd, 2011 20:49

I hear lots of small issues with the brass tube models, worst of which they don't perform as well as open bolt, and are most susceptible to cold weather.
As far as durability goes, the brass tube is a new design, few moving parts, things friction fit, etc.
The open bolt design is TWO parts. A block that holds the air nozzle. And an air nozzle from a GBB pistol. It's a design that's proven in hundreds of pistols, it's old tech, and therefore reliable.
Plus it looks way cooler than the brass tube design, and isnt that what GBBRs are all about? :D

Ive got the RA Tech NPAS kit for my WE M4. When the open bolt kit is released for the M4, will the NPAS kit still be compatiable?

Amos January 23rd, 2011 21:08

Nope.

Open and closed NPAS are very different.

turok_t January 23rd, 2011 21:12

What about the hop up assembly, will that also be changed?

Yup.

turok_t January 23rd, 2011 21:17

And what about the trigger set, and trigger box and everything inside?

Andy n January 23rd, 2011 21:19

When I converted my PDW over to open bolt I didn't have to touch the trigger assemble but I did have to change the bolt catch.

Actually, the brass tube is an OLD design, much older than open bolt/GBB pistol systems. It was used in classic airsoft (Escort).

ThunderCactus January 25th, 2011 04:40

Well, it wasn't durable back then either, and it's been out of the loop too long with no real overhauls or upgrades.
Like AEP's, been around a while, but nobody really cares enough to make REALLY good upgrades lol

So if im looking to get the new M4 open bolt kit, I understand that the following wont be compatible:

-RA tech NPAS
-RA tech hop up kit

Anything else that would need to be changed? Would RA tech inner barrels and trigger assembly/mechbox need to be changed as well?

The inner barrels would need to change i believe they are compatible with hi capa hop up buckings (i think). Trigger assembly should be the same. Magazine feed lips would need to be changed as well.

So if I have existing RA tech barrels, I cant use them right?

No, there are ra tech open bolt barrels, and ra tech closed bolt barrels.
