The modification needs to be done on both, the magwell, since the gun is plastic it is easy also it is not a visible mod (Unless you stand up in the middle of a firefight and pop the mag out and shout "Hey look, I got M16 mags to fit in my Famas") Plus it still allows the use of the stock famas mag.
Also the M16 mags need to be modified slightly as well but the modification still allows them to be used in the M16 / M4 you're gonna get later.

That looks fracking rediculous. Please do not murder a FA-MAS by doing anything like that.

In order to use M16 mags you either have to modify the magwell, in which case it will never except MAS mags again, or you have to modify the magazines, in which case they won't work in anything but a MAS. Everything I've read about this has said it's a difficult procedure that usually results in feeding problems, and the M16 mags are larger than the MAS mags and tend to get in the way a lot. But hey, whatever floats your boat.

also why do people say it is so nonupgradeable? v2/v3 stuff works with the gear box just fine :P, i plan on getting a set of helical gears and a new piston set for the gun :) as well as a m120 spring

Having done the mods required I've not had any problems with using the original Famas mags in the Famas or the modified M16 Mags in the famas and he modified M16 mags still work in all my M16 & M4s. No feeding issues either. I guess it is possible to mess it up so nothing works but hopefully you'd think some one would ask for advice before they got too far.
